The painting series “AutoMoto” introduction text
My life and artist studio are placed among the forests in the Finnish village Ratula in Kymenlaakso. This fact significantly affected and transformed my artistic visions and practice, which I reflect on in an ongoing painting series titled "AutoMoto" and “Solitude”.
Our house used to be a farmer's house and that's why you can find plenty of technical suppliers for repairing almost everything in the world. Except these, you can find huge piles of trashy stuff, mainly placed inside a big barn and surrounding outside area. I like harmony. This mess was making me depressed. One day, during the walk to the composter, with bio garbage, I noticed it. That trashy stuff has its own beauty! Suddenly I felt that they wanted to be painted. I portray car engines, tires, broken lawnmowers, and canisters of spoiled oils. The faded elegance and rust-stained surfaces, express for me the symbols of resilience and character. They stand as testaments to both - the fragility and strength of human beings. They remind us that beauty can be found even in the most imperfect and weathered forms. Each dent and scratch carries memories of the passage of time.
As technology advances and environmental concerns grow, the demand for alternative fuel sources has propelled the decline of gasoline. The rise of electric vehicles, powered by clean and renewable energy, has revolutionized the automotive industry. With my work, I ask significant and crucial questions: whether this is our path to an eco-friendly future?
People living in my neighborhood make heavy use of devices that require oil extraction because often there are no proper "greener" alternatives and sufficient financial support. The ecological demands continually lead to the loss of livelihood and forced departure from villages to cities. People, who had been working in connection with nature for generations, face troubles socializing in the city lifestyle and finding suitable jobs. Farming and forestry have always been a source of pride and a symbol of resilience for them. Losing traditional jobs erodes the sense of life purpose and pride in their work.
I’m an artist who cannot repair a car but I can fantasize about it.
“Auto-Moto” is a painting series of 30 oils on canvas of various sizes (40 cm x 40 cm - 200 cm x 200 cm). I began the series in May 2021.
